A bill that requires home health care agencies in Indiana to obtain a national (expanded) criminal record background check on employees will become effective July 1.
The current law only required a limited criminal record background check, unless certain circumstances warranted an expanded criminal record background check.
Home health care agency surveys will help verify the new bill’s provisions are being followed, as well as when complaints are made to the Indiana State Department of Health.
Whether the expanded criminal record background check is performed by the Indiana State Police, or a background screening company, the check will not include any credit history information.
The bill only applies to new employees, and has to be completed within three days of hire. Criminal record history for current employees who are suspected of having a criminal record conviction that would disqualify them can also be requested.
